The deadline for the 2011 Right Livelihood Award proposals is March 1. Everybody can propose anyone - be it an individual or an organization - except themselves, close relatives or their own organization. We would like to receive proposals by regular mail. Mark already in your calendar: The announcement of the 2011 Awardees will take place on September 29 and the Award Ceremony will be held December 5 in the Swedish Parliament.
Angie Zelter from Trident Ploughshares (UK, RLA 2001) visited Stockholm last week. Trident Ploughshares received the award "… for providing a practical model of principled, transparent and non-violent direct action dedicated to ridding the world of nuclear weapons." Angie came by our office together with three women who shared their story with us: When Trident Ploughshares received the Right Livelihood Award in 2001, some individuals who attended the Award Ceremony were really inspired and wanted to do something similar in Sweden. They founded Ofog, an antimilitaristic network. Now Angie is on tour through Sweden until March 6, together with Ofog. They want to call attention to the fact that Sweden is amongst the ten biggest weapon exporters worlwide and has a military test area (NEAT) almost the size of Belgium in the Northern part of the country . What a great example of how our Laureates inspire other people to act to make our world a better place!
From July 22-29, Angie Zelter will take part in an international camp against the NEAT military exercise area in Luleå, arranged by Ofog. NEAT is Europe’s largest overland military test range. Join in, the motto is: War starts here- let's stop it from here!
Interns play a vital role in our office. We are happy to welcome Steffi Geilhof, who is our research intern this spring. She recently graduated with a MA in Eastern European Studies from the Free University of Berlin. The main focus of her studies were sociology and political sciences. She also holds a BA in Integrated European studies (University of Bremen and University of Latvia). She is dealing with the incoming proposals and preparing material for the jury. |
