Award Laureates Propose a Candidate Support the Award
The Rightlivelihood Award
February 2012
Norwegian pension fund shouldn’t invest in dirty oil

27 Right Livelihood Award Laureates, board and jury members followed an appeal by Nnimmo Bassey (RLA 2010) and signed a petition to Norway’s Council on Ethics, which screens all investments by the Norwegian Government Pension Fund, asking them to divest all its holdings in Shell.
Oil spills in Nigeria seriously harm the environment and health of the people. Despite reports on the ongoing disastrous impact of oil production, Shell, the largest petroleum producer in the Niger delta, has not taken responsibility or changed their practices.

Propose a candidate for 2012

Our new research intern Lovisa Lönegren joined the staff in January and is already busy answering questions from around the world regarding proposals for the 2012 Right Livelihood Awards.

Anybody can propose a person or an organization (to whom they are not closely related), so if you know someone who is worthy the Award, please let her know.
We are exited to receive many interesting proposals before the deadline on March 1, 2012.
Please follow our guidelines and feel free to ask Lovisa if something seems unclear.

News that give hope

Plans to build the Keystone XL pipeline, prominently criticized by David Suzuki (RLA 2009) and Maude Barlow (RLA 2005) and protested by many, have been rejected by Barack Obama.
You can read Maude Barlow's take on the decision at the Huffington Post.

In Chile, a congressional committee found “irregularities” in the approval to built the widely protested HidroAysén dam. Juan Pablo Orrego (RLA 1998), who has been in the frontline of the campaign against the dam, applauded the work of the bipartisan committee, and took it as a sign that Chilean politicians might begin to incorporate citizens’ interests into their decision-making.
